15 - Bunker 1- Michael Francis McCarthy
Painter of Fine art Landscapes
Michaels paintings leave an unforgettable feeling in the viewer. The processes he uses to create his paintings are highly intuitive. Using fine hard wood panels like Kauri and Rimu, and applying layers of paint, he gradually builds up his panel from a deep sienna foundation to transparent, yet luminous shadows till finally rendering his lightest oil colours in delicate glazes. With oil paint, Michael conveys his deepest inner vision through the vehicle of landscape painting, a process that begins wih nature and ends with a revealing expression of nature.
Michael Francis McCarthy was born in San Diego, and until recently lived in San Jose, Northern California, where he had resided most of his life.
Art and music dominated Michael's life as a child, and when he became a young man he decided to be an artist. Studying drawing and art extensively for many years, he taught himself a multitude of different techniques. As Michael grew older he was driven towards pen and ink illustrations and completed many drawings in that media. Later, in his twenties, he was employed for many years in creating large scale graphic art prints for the hospitality industry. While in the corporate world Michael found that he enjoyed the challenge of creating attractive designs and illustrations digitally, ultimately though he wanted to express himself through the medium of oil paint. He began teaching himself about oil painting, and through much intense study and practice, he at last had found the perfect medium to convey the feelings that nature inspires.
Michael currently resides in New Zealand with his wife Marie and their cat Bob, creating beautiful paintings, travelling and enjoying his family.
