About the Exhibition
Filani Macassey is a Northland based artist with a BFA from Elam School of Fine Arts.
Filani was recently a finalist in the 2018 Wallace Arts Awards. The multimedia artist will be exhibiting a selection of works from 2001 to 2019, at the Yvonne Rust Gallery. Some of the works were created as a student at Elam from 2003 to 2007. All works will be for sale with proceeds going towards the artists’ next major project. The project will see Filani travelling in July to a village on the Greek island of Cyprus. “I have had Cyprus in my sights as a destination to produce a new body of work for a wee while. Dad was in the LRDG during WW2, in a roundabout way this connects me to the village of my namesake Filani. The village is in the settlement of Politiko in the Nicosia District of Cyprus. I have been given the opportunity to present a research paper in Athens, through the New Zealand Studies Association. So while I am in this part of the world I will continue on to Cyprus”
Filani’s art practice is essentially research based, which sees her covering many facets of a chosen project. This then culminates towards a development of new works.
