Maggie Cocco’s Science for Sociopaths 7PM – 8PM
The Quarry Arts Centre is excited to present the music and art of Maggie Cocco’s Science for Sociopaths!
Maggie Cocco is a composer, performer, and educator based in Whangarei and for the past year has been filling our ears with a variety of music including the neo mellow sounds of Science for Sociopaths. The novel show featuring original music and improvised collaborations with audience and local artists has been captivating audiences across New Zealand, earning an award for Best Music Performance at Auckland Fringe 2021. Now it returns to its inaugural city and The Yvonne Rust Gallery to feature the artworks made by musician, artist, and audience, and to close a year of touring with a handful of final shows.
Maggie Cocco’s Science for Sociopaths is brave, vulnerable, and fierce.
Her neo-mellow songs stem from the lineage of America’s rich singer-songwriter culture while her dynamic vocals range in expression from powerhouse to Disney princess. Intimate solo piano arrangements allow the songwriting to take centre stage. In performance, Maggie holds a room with a combination of sincere vulnerability and mesmerizing musicality.
This show features a 10-song cycle for voice and piano. Improvised visual art channels the intrinsic emotion of the musical journey in real time. At regular intervals throughout, the audience is invited to express their own interpretation of events via the artistic medium(s) provided.
