We have two wood kilns at the quarry – Manawa and the new Phoenix kiln, built in March 2024.
Manawa fires once or twice a year and is a big community effort, as it’s a 36 hour firing process that requires continual supervision. The next firing is over Matariki Winter Solstice -21-22 June 2025. You can learn more about being involved here.
The Phoenix Kiln is built and has gone through the initial learning stages of firing. Our first community firing of Phoenix is taking place May 8th – May 11th, please see the WORKSHOP page for more details. Many thanks to Duncan Shearer who designed and directed the build. Bricks for the new kiln
1841 bricks were needed to build the new Phoenix Wood Kiln! We sold bricks to help raise money for the new kiln. Thank you for everyone’s donations! Plaques for those who donated $100 will be installed.
