We have two wood kilns at the quarry – Manawa and the new Phoenix kiln, built in March 2024.
Manawa fires once or twice a year and is a big community effort, as it’s a 36 hour firing process that requires continual supervision. The next firing is over Matariki Winter Solstice – 22 June 2024. You can learn more about being involved here. There are plans to fire during Solstice in 2025.
The Phoenix Kiln is built and going through the initial learning stages of firing. More information will be coming about how to start being involved with this kiln.
We have a new Wood Kiln!
A smaller, soda friendly, wood kiln was built next to Manawa in March 2024 with Duncan Shearer who designed and directed the build. Read about Duncan building a Phoenix Kiln at Driving Creek Pottery in his blog here. Details of the building workshop below.
Bricks for the new kiln
1841 bricks were needed to build the new Phoenix Wood Kiln! We sold bricks to help raise money for the new kiln. Thank you for everyone’s donations! Plaques for those who donated $100 will be installed sometime during the year.
Duncan Shearer Wood Kiln Build Workshop – 5-15th March 2024 – to build the kiln. Awesome mahi.
