About this workshop:

The Quarry Arts Centre is excited to present this Kintsugi workshop course, where across three weekly workshops you will explore the traditional Japanese art of mending broken pottery. In this hands-on experience, you’ll bring your own broken ceramic which holds significant personal meaning to these workshops and learn the delicate technique of mending its broken pieces back together using Urushi (plant-based lacquer) dusted with metallic gold powder. Throughout the workshops, you will gain insight to the philosophy behind Kintsugi, emphasizing how the mended cracks symbolize an event in the life of the ceramic, which, rather than causing its destruction, has contributed to its unique beauty.

Tutor Aiko Fukumoto, has lived in New Zealand for 36 years and has connected to her heritage through Japanese arts. After discovering the philosophy of Kintsugi through a friend, she transformed her personal life challenges into opportunities for growth. For eight years, she’s practiced Traditional Kintsugi. Aiko has returned to the Quarry Arts Centre to lead these incredibly fulfilling Kintsugi workshops, sharing the beautiful and meditative philosophy of Kintsugi and teaching attendees that we have many chances to create our own beautiful lives.

Book now to join these workshops to beautifully mend your broken ceramic and learn this art of resilience and transformation.
