Welcome to The Quarry Arts Centre’s Beginner’s Clay Workshops Programme!

We’re thrilled to invite you to a vibrant and joyful journey into the world of ceramic glazes. Join us for an exciting workshop where you’ll have the opportunity to transform your bisque-fired pottery into stunning, colourful creations! This beginner-friendly session, led by experienced tutor and noted Northland ceramicist Julie Cromwell, is designed as an introduction for anyone eager to explore the art of glazing in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Throughout this two-hour workshop, you’ll dive into the basics of glaze application, discovering a spectrum of techniques that will ignite your creativity. From low fire, mid fire, to high fire, you’ll learn about various ceramic firing ranges and experiment with a wonderful array of potter’s choice glazes, celadon glazes, and satin matte glazes. Get ready to unleash your imagination as you explore glaze application tips, learn about colour variation and mixing, and master the art of layering to achieve beautiful results. We can’t wait to see you there!

Included are a range of Amaco high fire glazes, one bowl, several test tiles and firing. You are welcome to bring along your own existing bisque work (equal to 2 coffee mugs or 1 medium bowl) and inquire about your own choice of glazes.

Have you recently completed a clay workshop and are looking to fire your creations to complete your work?
Our glazing workshop is a wonderful complimentary workshop to any of our beginners clay workshops. However, understanding the timelines around clay work is essential to avoid disappointment and ensure your work is ready to be glazed during the workshop.

It is essential that you wait to be notified of your bisque fire completion BEFORE booking onto any glazing workshops. This is because we are unable to provide exact lead times from completing your creation in raw clay to a bisque fired, ready-to-glaze work.

Planning for one month between creating in clay and glazing is a good guide. Ceramics take time! The drying process of clay, as well as that of bisque and glaze firings all have estimated times, but these may be impacted by weather, humidity or kiln maintenance for example. If you’re creating for a special occasion, event or deadline we strongly advise you plan ahead when considering this workshop.

Kiln firing of your glazed works will be no greater than a kiln quarter shelf*. Firing volumes above this will incur additional charges at the usual public kiln firing rates. If you are unfamiliar with submitting your own work for firing, please chat with our friendly staff in the Yvonne Rust Gallery for assistance before 4.30pm. The team can also provide you with advice on glazes before the workshop starts at 2pm.
*Quarter shelf size: 300mm (w) × 230mm (d) × 150mm (h)
