These workshops are part of and led by the artists in the exhibition 'Carved Up' (28th November - 12 December 2025) in Bunker #2. With funded support by Whangārei District Council Creative Communities fund.

This beginner-friendly workshop is an invitation to explore the powerful relationship between people and place through the art of photography. This is the perfect starting point for a photographic creative journey.

What the participants will learn:
•    Camera Fundamentals: Gain confidence by mastering essential camera settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and understand how they work together to create the perfect exposure.

•    Composition & Light: Discover how to see like a photographer. We'll cover fundamental composition techniques and learn to "paint with light" to create images that have impact and evoke emotion.

•    Visual Storytelling: Beyond the technical skills, this workshop focuses on the participants’ unique artistic voice. As an immigrant who has used photography to connect with the land of Aotearoa, Marlon will guide the students in using the camera to express their personal experiences and observations.

•    Thematic Exploration: We will use the theme of "disconnection" to inspire our work, encouraging them to create images that reflect their feelings and perceptions of the land and its history. This is an opportunity to look deeper, to find stories that aren't immediately visible, and to use art to communicate your place in the world.

Please bring:

  • a Camera, or a Phone with Camera
  • comfortable clothes and footwear. Snacks, a drink, and a packed lunch.
