A creative village in nature with a legacy in clay

The Quarry Arts Centre is an experience that moves you

Come and discover the magic

Tucked into the hills of Whangārei and nestled among native bush and birdsong, the Quarry Arts Centre has quietly held space for artists, learners, and locals for more than 40 years. A visit to the Quarry is an experience like no other. It’s a place to recharge, create and be inspired.

Get in touch

A place for clay. A place for people.

The Quarry Arts Centre is a welcoming place where travellers come to explore Aotearoa’s creative and cultural roots, and potters and artists find hands-on experiences and connection. Beginners, explorers, and the quirky all feel at home, and we love celebrating the uniqueness of Quarry’s site, its heritage, and its land.

Volunteer at the Quarry

The Quarry would not be what it is without the valuable help of volunteers. Whether you’re able to koha some time regularly or contribute your skills periodically, we’d love to hear from you.

The Makers Shop

Representing artists from our local Quarry community, the wider Tai Tokerau arts community and further, The Maker’s Shop is the ideal place to find quality pieces to add to your art collection, gifts for others and an excellent way to support the artistic community.

Stock is regularly turned over so there is always something new to see, jewellery including pounamu, functional and ornamental ceramics, paintings, cards, mixed media wall art, and more.

Come when the kiln is firing

The 30+ years old working wood-fired kiln named called “Manawa”, tucked in the bush, is a destination in its own right. If you are curious about what 1,200 degrees feels like, come visit! The Quarry also has a fire brick pad suitable for above ground pit-firing, raku, or small temporary firing structures, such as tee-pee kiln, turf-kiln and bath-tub.
