Ngā Puhi | Waikato | Ngāti Maniapoto

Sarah Hikuroa is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice recalls, reflects, and explores inherent patterns that depict Pūrākau, Te Taiao, and Whakapapa. Working across digital design, painting, mahi rāranga, natural pigments, jewellery, and hue, Sarah brings together traditional and contemporary forms to express interconnected narratives of place, ancestry, and environment.

At the heart of their practice is a deep consideration of Mauri—the life force that exists within all living beings. Each artwork becomes an act of Rongoā, where materials, process, and intention are woven together to ground the conceptual kaupapa and hold space for reflection and reconnection.

Based in Whangarei, Sarah holds a Bachelor of Art and Design in Visual Arts from Auckland University of Technology. While she has received training from Western education systems, she also grew up being taught mahi rāranga from her father and nannies and through various wānanga,. Her work has been exhibited in the Hihiaua Cultural Centre, Quarry Arts Centre, Toi Ngā Puhi exhibitions/festivals, Māori Art Markets, Indigenous exchange between Te Tai Tokerau Māori Arts Collective and Ngā Tangatā Moemoea, and International Indigenous Artists Gathering.
