Tutor: Olivia Mitten
Maximum attendees: 8
Price: $80 per person
Location: Scallop Room, Quarry Arts Centre, 21 Selwyn Avenue, Whangarei 0110
These workshops are part of and led by the artists in the exhibition 'Carved Up' (28th November - 12 December 2025) in Bunker #2.
In this workshop, you'll discover an easy-to-learn technique loosely based on traditional scrimshaw. Using simple tools, you'll etch a streamlined design into a prepared bone blank. Then, you'll apply both natural dyes and man-made inks to add colour and contrast, making your design stand out. You'll leave with a unique, wearable piece of art that tells your own story.
Be prepared to get a bit messy, avoid loose clothing and dangly jewellery. Covered footwear required and long hair needs to be tied back.
Basic tools and PPE will be provided, however if participants wish to bring their own this will be helpful:
-Safety googles/eye protection
- Dust mask
- Ear muffs
-Hand files/chisels suitable for bone work
- Dremel
Please bring: comfortable clothes and footwear. Snacks, a drink, and a packed lunch.

Workshops are held at the Quarry Arts Centre operated by the Northland Craft Trust, a registered non-profit charitable trust.
As we don't have a cleaner to help us out, we ask that you check with your child to ensure they have done their bit and cleaned their tools and wiped their table area when picking them up. We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a tidy environment, and all cleaning tools are provided for your convenience.
