Large Cones: require mounting in a commercial cone plaque,
Clay pat or wire cone holder before use. Mounting height
and angle is critical for consistent results.
Separating Cone Pairs:
Cones are formed in pairs and can be separated by
grasping the base and gently twisting along parting line.
Use Of Cones:
Cones are used to witness the heat work applied to ceramic ware
by a kiln. Common practice is to use multiple sets of three,
consecutively numbered cones placed strategically throughout the
ware setting to cover a wide temperature range. The first cone
in the series is called the Guide cone, the second is the Firing cone,
and the last is the Guard cone. A cone will bend when it is heated
to within a time and temperature heating profile. A bending difference
of one cone or less throughout a kiln indicates good firing practice.
Interpretation of the cones bending point is of considerable aid for
making improvements to firing conditions and checking the
repeatability and uniformity of a kiln.

Workshops are held at the Quarry Arts Centre operated by the Northland Craft Trust, a registered non-profit charitable trust.
As we don't have a cleaner to help us out, we ask that you check with your child to ensure they have done their bit and cleaned their tools and wiped their table area when picking them up. We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a tidy environment, and all cleaning tools are provided for your convenience.
